We have a vocalist!

Not too many new developments in Zelda's world. She is still a very timid kitty. Now that she has been properly fed for several weeks, food actually works a little better as a motivational tool. So we have started to sit in her view when wet food is out. She wasn't happy about that at first, but she is working on getting used to us being closer and eating with us nearby. This has also helped with her eating her dry food! I was afraid she was getting spoiled with the wet food since she didn't really touch the dry food. Now she is definitely chomping on both. I would love to know how much weight she is gaining since she was way too skinny when she first arrived.

Zelda is definitely a night cat. Around midnight she will start to get really stir crazy and curious. I watch her on the cam and she is in and out of her box and looking around. She sits in the middle of her area and looks around. She is just waiting for me to go to bed so she can start her mischief. I caught her on cam making faces at me! (Ok, maybe not at me. But I felt like it was probably directed at me.)

Who knows what she does when we do go to bed. All I know is she is telling someone about it. Quite soon after I lie down I hear “meow, Meow, meOW, MEOW, MEOW, MEOW”. This only started a couple weeks ago. She hadn't made a peep before then. I only wish I knew what she was saying.

We wanted to do something special for her since she likes sitting in her box. It seemed a little cramped and figuring she likes to hide we thought a kitty tent/house thing would be great for her. Since I like to sew I thought I would just make one. So I did. It took a whole day! A cute little kitty tent with a super soft squishy kitty bed for inside. Well, she HATES it. Of course. She wouldn't go inside to save her life. I still have high hopes that she will come around and want to lounge inside of it, but I know better in reality. Ahhh life with a cat!

Poor little girl...

Well, Zelda has been with us for 2 weeks and she has made some progress during that time. The poor girl seemed sweet and scared at first but I think the sweetness was due to the fact she was pretty much catatonic. (No pun intended) She really wouldn't move, eat, drink, clean herself, or do anything else for the first few days she was here. All she did was hide. It got to the point where we were getting worried so we had to do what we had to do.

First thing was first. She needed a bath, because we didn't have to look for her when she would hide, we could just smell where she was. It was that bad.
She did let me comb out her fur, even if she was reluctant at first. But it helped to get a lot of the loose fur out, and get rid of any matted fur. After this she let us hold her and pet her, so we were pretty optimistic. Then came the bath...
Now, giving a cat a bath is never fun, so I wasn't expecting this to be any different. Unfortunately, she was FURIOUS about getting wet. She went from a sweet little scared kitty to the Tasmanian devil! We were all a little traumatized by the event. She went into super stealth mode after this.

Everyday we started playing a game called “where is the cat?”. She found the craziest places to hide!
We would find her between the smallest places, behind the couch, in the cupboards, behind the shower! It was crazy... and she was separating herself from her food. So we eventually closed off a lot of the more inconvenient hiding places and made her a small closed off area where she would feel safe, but also where food and litter would be close by. While she still has access to the rest of the house, she mainly stays in there, and that is fine with us. It's easier for us to monitor her without her knowing. She doesn't love it when she knows she is being watched.

You can see her too, if you would like. Just check out her live stream HERE.

While she is still very nervous about us being in her space. She is much more alert, she eats more regularly now, and she uses her litter box (yay!). We just have to work on her trust and keep giving her the time she needs to relax more and more each day.

Hopefully soon she will let me brush her again... because her fur is a mess!

Our First Foster Kitty

This is the picture that started it all.  One of the local animal shelters were called in to help four cats, all in need of care.  Not just care, special care after living in terrible conditions.

Who could resist a face like that?  I knew it would take some time, but I wanted to help.  We have a simple, quiet home, where a cat would be alone and could be spoiled all the time.

So we contacted http://www.dbbh.no/ and let them know we were happy to help!  Since this organization is so dedicated to animal welfare, they got back to us right away and we had a date to pick up a one of the little floofballs.  Learning about their terrible ordeal in the house of a "collector", it was sad to think about what they must have gone through.  However, we were happy to be told we would be taking home this beauty.  She was so so scared, and softly growled as we would pet her.  Yet, somehow, so so sweet at the same time.

We got her home and, not surprisingly, she didn't come out of the carrier.  We let her rest while we set up an area for her with food, water, etc. and after several hours we decided it was time to show her some love.  Even though she doesn't know she likes love yet.

So this is the start of our first journey.  With a lot of love, patience, compassion, and a bath; this gorgeous girl will be happy, healthy, and ready for her forever home.

Meet our first foster kitty,  Zelda.
